Refresher course in IMDG Dangerous Goods by Sea

The logistics Industry offers great scope for progression and employee development, and a changing environment means that training can help keep us ahead of the game here at Allseas.

Operations Assistant, Lauren Tyler has recently undertaken the refresher course in IMDG Dangerous Goods by Sea to keep on top of changes within the industry.

As multimodal transport specialists, Freight Forwarders are required to have an understanding that the carriage of dangerous goods is subject to compliance with national and international regulations. Forwarders don’t necessarily physically handle dangerous goods, but an awareness of such shipments can help catch potential mistakes before they happen and keep cargo moving.

In addition to this, Lauren is currently working through a Level 5 Professional Diploma in Logistics and Transport delivered by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. The course integrates the working environment and academic study into assignments that draw on work experience and current industry topics. She has completed and passed the Management module and is now working on Project Management, Movement of Goods and Transport Operations.

Lauren says:

“I have worked with hazardous cargo for nearly 5 years now from a shipper and forwarder position and I understand the need for accuracy with these shipments. A simple typo, confusion over UOM or not checking the IMDG Code properly can have severe consequences not just from a health and safety perspective, but for our customers and their supply chains. What we aim to do is to thoroughly check DGN’s as early as possible for errors to keep our customers satisfied and to also ensure compliance with national and international regulations.

The CILT course is most definitely a challenge; as a Level 5 qualification it is on par with the University Foundation Degree. What this course does is give an insight into all areas of Logistics and Transport, also including management, human resources, finance and business planning to give a rounded knowledge of the ins and outs of the industry and also any business operation. The assignments require current industry knowledge and has let me engage with my colleagues more to utilise their expertise and help to inform some of the assignments.”
